The DAF unit is used to split emulsified oil from the water using a chemical coagulant.

Once the oils are separated, they are floated to the surface on micro bubbles created in the base of the tank using dissolved air.

The oils form a sludge layer on the surface of the DAF tank and this sludge is automatically scraped from the surface for discharge to a recovered oil tank.
